THUNDER TAKE 2-1 SERIES LEAD WITH 3-1 WIN OVER SOUTH CAROLINA

Glens Falls, NY - The Adirondack Thunder won Game 3 of their Eastern Conference Semifinal series by a 3-1 final to take a 2-1 series lead over the South Carolina Stingrays on Tuesday evening at the Glens Falls Civic Center.

South Carolina opened the scoring four minutes into the game when Caleb Herbert notched his fifth goal of the postseason. The visitors won the offensive zone faceoff and the puck was controlled at the blueline by Wade Epp, who found Herbert in the high slot, where the forward fired past Adirondack netminder Ken Appleby for the early 1-0 lead. The goal marked the second assist of the playoffs for Epp, who had the lone assist on the play.

The Thunder tied the game at one with 6:30 to play in the opening period as they converted while on the man advantage. Ryan Lomberg took a Greg Wolfe pass and skated up the right flank into the offensive zone where he was checked, but the puck skittered to Heard, who accelerated past two opposing skaters into the slot and shot past the out stretched glove of South Carolina goalie Mark Dekanich for his fourth goal of the playoffs. Lomberg and Wolfe collected the helpers on the play, the fifth of the playoffs for Wolfe.

Adirondack took a lead they would not relinquish with just under six minutes remaining in the second period on Ryan Lomberg’s third goal of the playoffs. Lomberg forced a turnover in the offensive zone, skated down the slot and fired top shelf past Dekanich for the 2-1 advantage. The tally marked the third straight game on home ice that Lomberg has found the back of the net, accounting for every game at the Civic Center during the 2016 postseason.

The Thunder sealed the victory with 14.5 seconds remaining in the third period on Gunnar Hughes’ empty net goal for his first goal of the postseason. Ben Johnson picked up the assist on the play, his fourth of the playoffs.

With the win, the Thunder take a 2-1 series lead over the Stingrays. Game 4 is Thursday night with a 7:00 p.m. puck drop scheduled, while Game 5 will take place on Saturday, also beginning at 7:00 p.m.
