TRENTON – Shane Harper scored the lone goal for the Adirondack Thunder in a 4-1 loss to the Trenton Ironhawks on Saturday night at CURE Insurance Arena.
Trenton opened the scoring for the first goal on home ice since 2013 as Mikey Colella fired a wrist shot from the left circle that beat goaltender Jeremy Brodeur for the lead. The goal was Colella’s second of the year 15:43 into the game. The assists were awarded to Liam Coughlin and Max Patterson and the Thunder trailed 1-0 after 20 minutes of play.
After a dominant shift by Adirondack, one bounce gave the Ironhawks a breakaway chance, and John Gelatt beat Jeremy Brodeur for a 2-0 lead. The breakaway goal was Gelatt’s first of the year at 8:10 of the second period with Mikey Colella collecting the only assist and the Thunder trailed 2-0 after two periods.
Shane Harper got Adirondack on the board in the third period on a rebound in front of the crease. Harper took a loose puck and beat goaltender Ryan Fanti for his first of the year at the 4:05 mark of period three and the Thunder trailed 2-1.
With the Thunder trying to tie the game late in regulation, a floater from the point sailed through traffic and just under the cross bar to give Trenton another two-goal lead. The goal was Kapcheck’s first of the year with assists from Liam Coughlin and Ryan Botrill with 2:42 left and the Ironhawks took a 3-1 lead.
Kyle Penney added an empty-net goal for Trenton with 1:36 left in regulation and the Ironhawks came away with a 4-1 victory over the Thunder, Jeremy Brodeur denied 26 of 29 shots in the loss, whole Ryan Fanti collected the win with a 25-save effort.
