ADIRONDACK THUNDER MOURN THE PASSING OF DAVE STRADER

Glens Falls, NY – The Adirondack Thunder mourn the passing of legendary broadcaster Dave Strader, who passed away this morning following a battle with cancer. The Thunder have issued the following statement on Dave’s passing:

“Dave Strader was an outstanding broadcaster and ambassador of hockey but more importantly he was an outstanding person. As far as he went in his career, Dave never forgot his roots in Glens Falls and has always been an instrumental figure for hockey in our region. We are honored to have Dave’s name adorn the press box at Cool Insuring Arena where it all began for him. We extend our deepest condolences to his wife Colleen along with the rest of his family.”

Strader, a Glens Falls native and two-time Adirondack Hockey Hall of Fame inductee, was the first professional broadcaster at the Glens Falls Civic Center as he spent six seasons as the voice of the Adirondack Red Wings from 1979 - 1985. He went on to call NHL games with Detroit, Florida, Phoenix and Dallas, as well as nationally with ESPN, ABC, Fox and NBC Sports, where he broadcast NHL games as well as hockey at the 2006 and 2014 Winter Olympics.

In June 2016, Dave was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer in the bile duct but he returned to the booth in March 2017 to call five Dallas Stars home games and two Stanley Cup Playoff Games for NBC Sports. In April 2017, Dave was honored by the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto as the 2017 Foster Hewitt Memorial Award winner for outstanding contributions as a hockey broadcaster.

Dave and Colleen have also established the Dave Strader Scholarship, given annually to a high school student from Glens Falls High School, the alma mater of both Dave and Colleen. Anyone interested in making a donation to the scholarship should send it to Janice Casey, Treasurer, Glens Falls City Schools at 15 Quade St, Glens Falls, NY 12801. All donations are tax deductible.
