THUNDER SIGN GUNNAR HUGHES

Glens Falls, NY - The Adirondack Thunder, proud ECHL affiliate of the Calgary Flames, announced today that they have signed forward Gunnar Hughes.

Hughes, 22, joins the Calgary Flames organization for his first professional season after a four-year career at St. Lawrence University in the ECAC. The Highland Park, IL native amassed 73 points (28-45-73) over 143 career games at St. Lawrence, including a career best 23 points in his sophomore season. The 6’1” forward also posted 22 points (12-10-22) during his senior season in 2014-15, where his 12 goals led the team on route to an appearance in the ECAC semi-finals. He also collected five special-teams goals, three on the power play and two shorthanded, and finished second in the ECAC with three shorthanded points. Hughes was also team captain during his senior season after he was an assistant captain as a junior and was given the Jinx Doyle award in 2015 for leadership and outstanding contributions to the program.

Hughes joined the St. Lawrence program after a season in the USHL with the Waterloo Blackhawks, where he collected 26 points (15-11-26) in 57 games played. He also comes from an esteemed hockey family, which includes his brother George, with whom he skated two seasons at St. Lawrence and sister Aleca, who was a team captain at Yale University. Hughes’ father, George, and mother, Allison, both played college hockey at Harvard University and Boston University respectively. Gunnar’s uncle, Jack Hughes, also skated at Harvard and was a member of the preliminary roster of the 1980 United States Olympic Hockey Team.

“Gunnar graduated from St. Lawrence as one of the best captains I’ve ever coached,” St. Lawrence Men’s Hockey Head Coach Greg Carvel said. “Gunnar is a character player who wills himself towards scoring goals and winning battles. He’s got the intangibles that many other players don’t have and has the ability to out compete and out will his opponents.”

Full season, partial season, flex and group ticket plans are now available to renew or purchase for the Adirondack Thunder’s inaugural 2015-16 season, presented by Bud Light. The benefits of being a Thunder season ticket holder include a savings of 27 to 42 percent off box office pricing. All full season, 22 game and 12 game Thunder season ticket holders are entitled to unlimited unused ticket exchange, playoff ticket priority and the ability to buy tickets all season long at the discounted season ticket price.
