Cincinnati, OH - The Adirondack Thunder fired a season-high 46 shots on goal but were unable to solve Cincinnati Cyclones netminder Joel Rumpel in a 2-0 loss on Thursday evening at U.S. Bank Arena.
The Cyclones got on the board with the lone goal of the first period, scored less than three minutes from the intermission. With Cincinnati positioned in the offensive zone, forward Shawn O’Donnell fed teammate Jordan Sims in front, who fired on net and saw his shot denied by Adirondack netminder Mason McDonald, but the rebound rolled over McDonald’s shoulder, off his back and into the net. The goal was the 13th of the season for Sims with O’Donnell and forward Dominic Zombo collecting the assists on the play, the ninth of the season for Zombo.
Cincinnati capitalized on a fortunate second-period bounce behind the Thunder net to push the score to 2-0. With the puck rimmed around the boards, the puck eluded McDonald behind his own net and after he was able to push aside a shot from Shane Walsh, the puck fell to Tommy Mele, who fired a slap shot into the gaping net for his ninth goal of the season. Walsh collected the lone assist on the play, his 24th of the season.
The Thunder and Cyclones square off again on Saturday evening with another 7:35 puck drop at U.S. Bank Arena in Cincinnati.
