Reading, PA – The Adirondack Thunder earned a point but saw their overtime struggles continue as they dropped a 2-1 final to the Reading Royals on Friday evening at Santander Arena.
The hosts opened the scoring 6:37 into the game as defenseman Reese Wilcox scored his first career ECHL goal to put Reading ahead 1-0. After Adirondack netminder Drew Fielding made a sliding save on Matt Willows, Reading forward Matt Wilkins collected the puck and fed Wilcox at the right point, who fired home on the blocker side to open the scoring. Willows and Wilkins collected the assists on the play, the 15th assist of the season for Willows.
Adirondack came back to knot the score at one as forward Brett Pollock fired home his eighth goal of the season at the 9:57 mark of the opening period. Pollock collected the puck from defenseman Kevin Lough and as he cut through the slot, fired a wrist shot past the glove hand of Reading netminder Martin Ouelette for the goal, his fifth point in his past six games. Lough and defenseman Roman Dyukov collected the assists on the play, Dyukov’s eighth helper of the season.
After scoreless second and third periods, Adirondack was downed in overtime as Reading capitalized on the man advantage for the game winner. With just two seconds remaining on the Royals’ power play, Jesper Petterson wired a shot from the top of the right circle that beat Fielding on the blocker side for the game-winning goal. Justin Crandall and Robbie Czarnik collected the assists on the play, Crandall’s 21st of the season.
The Thunder are back in action tomorrow evening as they travel to Norfolk to complete their weekend with a meeting against the Admirals.
