Boise, ID – The Adirondack Thunder fell for the first time in regulation on the road, as they dropped a 4-2 decision to the Idaho Steelheads on Saturday evening at CenturyLink Arena.
After a scoreless first period, Adirondack opened the scoring for the third time in three games in Idaho, as they converted on the man advantage 6:07 into the middle stanza. Patch Alber moved the puck across the blueline to forward Peter MacArthur and the Thunder captain unloaded a slap shot from the left point that went top shelf over the glove of Idaho netminder Landon Bow. The tally was the second of the season for Adirondack’s captain, while Alber and Mathieu Brodeur picked up the assists, the tenth point of the season for Brodeur.
The Steelheads overturned the one-goal deficit with two tallies in the final 95 seconds of the second period. First, it was Anthony Luciani who collected a feed from teammate Travis Walsh off the rush and fired through Adirondack netminder Ken Appleby for his fourth goal of the season. Just 1:23 later, Idaho struck again with 12 seconds remaining in the second period. Travis Ewanyk won a faceoff in the offensive zone back to defenseman Charlie Dodero, who collected the pass and fired a shot off of a Thunder body in front, that deflected past Appleby. The tally was Dodero’s third of the season.
The visitors drew level 5:44 into the third period as Dana Fraser shot home from the right point to knot the score at two. After holding the puck into the attacking end, defenseman Keegan Kanzig sent the puck right into Fraser’s wheelhouse, where the Tatamagouche, NS native one-timed it through traffic and past Bow for his third goal of the season. Kanzig and Lane collected the assists on the play, the first point of Kanzig’s professional career.
It took Idaho less than two minutes to regain their advantage, however, as the Steelheads cashed in after the Thunder were unable to get a shot away on a 2-on-1 at the other end of the ice. Luciani threw a pass across the blueline in his offensive end that evaded the Thunder defense. Kyle Jean collected the puck, moved in on Appleby and slotted home for his third goal of the season. Luciani and Glen collected the assists on the play, the second helper of both the evening and the season for Glen.
Despite back-to-back power play chances for the Thunder, Idaho went the other way and got a shorthanded goal with 3:27 to play in the third to ice the game. Forward Joe Basaraba carried the puck down the right wing, skated into the attacking zone and fired past Appleby’s blocker for his third goal of the season. The goal was unassisted.
