Elmira, NY –The Adirondack Thunder won their fourth straight game, their third with a shutout, as they defeated the Elmira Jackals by a 1-0 score on Sunday afternoon at First Arena in Elmira, NY. Kent Simpson collected his second consecutive shutout with 24 saves, extending Adirondack’s shutout streak to 199 minutes and 42 seconds, dating back to the third period of the Thunder’s win on Saturday, January 9 over South Carolina.
Adirondack got today’s scoring started with an even strength tally 13:09 into the first period. Mitchell Heard carried the puck through the Elmira defense and into the offensive zone, where he set up a streaking James Henry, who put his wrist shot past Jackals’ netminder Alex Vazzano for the goal. The goal for Henry, his second of the season, marked his first tally since he returned from injury on December 31. Heard and Louick Marcotte collected the assists on the play, the sixteenth of the season for Heard.
Kent Simpson took care of the rest of the game for the Thunder, as he turned in his second consecutive shutout with 24 saves. Vazzano did his part for the Jackals, as he turned aside all but one of Adirondack’s 37 shots on goal, but was denied his first career ECHL victory. With the win, the Thunder moved back into first place in the East Division for the first time since December 3.
The Thunder are back in action tomorrow afternoon, as they complete their three-in-three set in Reading for a Monday matinee against the Royals.
