Glens Falls, NY—The Adirondack Thunder scored twice in the first period and never looked back as they took down the Elmira Jackals by a 2-1 score on Wednesday evening at the Glens Falls Civic Center.
The Thunder got the scoring started just 2:46 into the game as Mads Eller led a shorthanded breakout with Greg Wolfe and Wolfe found the back of the net by tipping Wolfe’s sneaking the puck through the five hole of Elmira netminder C.J. Motte. Wolfe’s assist gives him ten points on the season while defenseman Ryan Culkin collected the lone assist, the second of the season for the blueliner.
The Jackals tied it up with a little over seven minutes to play in the first when defenseman Kevin Clare’s shot from the point was redirected in by Union College graduate Mark Bennett after Elmira created traffic in front of Adirondack netminder Ken Appleby. It was the former Dutchmen’s second goal of the year, while Tyler Currier collected his first assist of the season, to match five goals.
With the first period coming to a close, the Thunder got a late tally of the stick of Louick Marcotte to grab the lead before the intermission. Marcotte’s goal was a perfectly executed play, going tic-tac-toe from Mitchell Heard to Ryan Lomberg and finishing with Marcotte, who put his shot off of Motte’s shoulder and into the top of the net. Marcotte’s goal total increases to six with the marker, while Heard extended his scoring streak to five games with the secondary assist.
With the victory, Adirondack moved to 11-2 on the season and retained their hold on first place in the division. Ken Appleby collected his ninth win of the season with a 32-save effort between the pipes.
