Glens Falls, NY - The Adirondack Thunder, proud ECHL affiliate of the Calgary Flames, have announced their 21-man Opening Night roster. The Thunder open their inaugural season of play on the road tomorrow, Friday, October 16, against the Elmira Jackals.
The Thunder’s Opening Night roster consists of 12 forwards, seven defensemen and two goaltenders.
Forwards (12): Rob Bordson, Stephen Buco, Alexandre Carrier, Mads Eller, Kyle Flanagan, Dana Fraser, James Henry, Gunnar Hughes, Michael Kirkpatrick, Ryan Lomberg, Louick Marcotte and Greg Wolfe.
Defensemen (7): Mike Bergin, Mathieu Brodeur, Mike Busillo, Ryan Constant, Luke Curadi, Joe Faust and David Shields.
Goaltenders (2): Ken Appleby and Drew Fielding.
To get down to 21 players, the Thunder have placed forward Garrett Ladd and defenseman C.J. Chartrain on the reserve list and forwards Roberts Lipsbergs and Jeff Silengo on the 21-day Injured Reserve List.
The Thunder’s roster consists of eight players (Bordson, Carrier, Flanagan, Wolfe, Brodeur, Constant, Faust and Shields) with American Hockey League regular season experience and another seven players (Eller, Fraser, Hughes, Kirkpatrick, Lomberg, Marcotte and Bergin) that attended an AHL training camp this season. Goaltender Ken Appleby is the lone Thunder player on an NHL contract, with the New Jersey Devils, while Eller, Kirkpatrick, Lomberg and Marcotte are on AHL contracts with the Stockton Heat and Faust is on an AHL contract with the Albany Devils.
Four Thunder players were originally drafted into the NHL: Mike Bergin (Dallas, Round 7, 209th Overall in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft), Mathieu Brodeur (Phoenix, Round 3, 76th Overall in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft), Joe Faust (New Jersey, Round 4, 114th Overall in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft) and David Shields (St. Louis, Round 6, 168th Overall in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft).
Bordson, Brodeur and Constant fall under the ECHL’s “veteran” description, having amassed a total of 260-or-more regular season games at the ECHL level or higher. Eleven Thunder players (Buco, Eller, Fraser, Hughes, Kirkpatrick, Lomberg,Marcotte, Busillo, Curadi, Appleby and Fielding) are classified as rookies, although both Buco and Busillo played in the ECHL last season.
