Manchester, NH – For the second night in a row, the Adirondack Thunder and Manchester Monarchs went to overtime to decide their pre-season matchup. It was Adirondack, however, who came out on top this afternoon in a 3-2 victory at St. Anselm College in Manchester, NH.
In similar fashion to last night’s home pre-season contest, today’s first period saw the Monarchs jump out to a 1-0 lead. The goalscorer for Manchester was forward Joe Diamond, with the assists going to Austin Block and Matt Leitner. Diamond’s goal was the only scoring in a first period that saw the Monarchs hold a narrow 11-9 shots on goal advantage.
Once again following the script from the night prior, the Thunder got on the board midway through the second period as forward Stefano Momesso collected his first tally in a Thunder jersey to knot the score at one. Assists on the play went to Greg Wolfe and Mads Eller, giving the Danish forward Eller points in back-to-back nights.
Adirondack would take its first lead of the night at the 8:20 mark of the second period, as Michael Kirkpatrick put a shot past Manchester netminder and Niskayuna, NY native Colin Stevens to make it 2-1 for the visitors. Eller became the game’s first multi-point scorer as he and blueliner Joe Faust had the assists on the play.
The Monarchs would level things up less than a minute later, however, as Alex Lintuniemi buried one 9:16 into the middle stanza. Last night’s game winning goal scorer Lintuniemi was assisted on the play by Matt White and Jordan Samuels-Thomas.
After a scoreless third period, the two teams once again made their way to a 3-on-3 overtime session but today’s matchup had a different outcome for the Thunder. Forward Stephen Buco made his mark with the game winning goal 2:03 into the extra session. Winger James Henry collected the assist on Buco’s tally, giving Henry points in both pre-season contests.
The Thunder conclude their pre-season schedule with a 1-0-1-0 record. Adirondack’s regular season campaign opens this Friday, October 16, on the road against Elmira before the home opener on October 24 against Manchester.
