COMEBACK FALLS JUST SHORT AS FLAMES FALL 4-3 TO ADMIRALS

Glens Falls, NY – The Adirondack Flames dropped their third game in a row, as they fell to the Milwaukee Admirals by a final score of 4-3 in overtime in front of a sold out Glens Falls Civic Center on Saturday evening.

It was a big night for David Wolf, as he extended his point scoring streak to four games with two of the three Adirondack goals in the contest, and an assist on the game tying goal with 50 seconds to go in regulation time, scored by Michael Ferland. Goaltender Brad Thiessen made 24 saves in defeat. Ben Hanowski, Mark Cundari, and Emile Poirier also earned assists in the game.

After a scoreless start to the game, Milwaukee got the tilt’s first goal at 18:33 of the opening period. With Michael Liambas in the penalty box for slashing, the Flames found themselves on the power play for the second time during the period. Adirondack was unable to enter the offensive zone and Richard Clune stole the puck from Cundari at center ice, raced in on Thiessen, and beat the Flames netminder glove side with a rising wrist shot. The goal for Clune was his third of the season, and was unassisted.

The Admirals doubled their lead just 1:56 into the second period, when Miikka Salomaki intercepted the puck in the neutral zone, rushed into the zone on a two-on-one, and beat Thiessen with a backhand shot. The goal for Salomaki was his sixth of his season, and just like Milwaukee’s first goal, it also came unassisted.

The Flames pulled back within one at 7:16 of the middle frame when Wolf beat Milwaukee netminder Magnus Hellberg off of a perfect feed from Hanowski. After Cundari got the puck up to Hanowski, he and Wolf, the German native, came on net in a two-on-one. The two forwards played catch, until Wolf eventually poked in the puck from point blank range to get Adirondack on the board. The goal for Wolf was his eighth of the campaign and was assisted by Hanowski and Cundari.

The Admirals regained the two-goal lead at 15:15 of the second period, when Viktor Arvidsson buried a one-time slap shot from the right circle. Playing with the man-advantage, Milwaukee cycled the puck, until Taylor Aronson fed a pass to Arvidsson, who wound up and did not miss. The shot beat Thiessen glove side, and was the Milwaukee forwards’ 13th goal of the season. Aronson and Brendan Leipsic earned the assists on the goal.

Just 77 seconds after Milwaukee again went up by two, Wolf netted his second goal of the evening to pull the Flames back within one. With the Flames buzzing around the Milwaukee net, Poirier threaded the needle to find Wolf in front. The 25-year-old forward finished the play as he lit the lamp for the ninth time this season. Poirier was credited with the lone assist on the play.

The puck then dropped on the third period, with Adirondack still trailing by one, and for 19 minutes and eight seconds, that was how the score remained. But with just 50.9 seconds to play in regulation, Ferland put the puck past Hellberg on a broken play in the net mouth to knot the game at three. The goal for Ferland, which was his fifth of the season, was also his first in 13 games. David Wolf was credited with the lone assist on the goal.

Overtime began with the score tied at three, but just 1:48 into the extra frame, Arvidsson beat Thiessen with a tremendous individual effort. The Milwaukee forward gained control of the puck, navigated through the offensive zone, and ripped a backhand shot up and over the Thiessen to seal the deal for the Admirals. The goal, which was Arvidsson’s second of the game and 14th of the season, was unassisted.

The Flames return to action next Friday in Rochester, when they will faceoff against the Americans at Blue Cross Arena. The two teams will then head back to Glens Falls the following night for the second half of a home-and-home on Saturday. In addition to being Hockey Night in Glens Falls, presented by Bud Light, that evening’s game will also be Amanda’s House Night, where one dollar from every ticket sold will benefit Amanda’s House, in association with Glens Falls Hospital.
