Glens Falls, NY – The Adirondack Thunder, proud ECHL affiliate of the New Jersey Devils, announced today that it has signed defenseman Desmond Bergin to a standard player contract for the 2018-2019 season.
Bergin, 25, returns to the Thunder after posting 43 points (15-28-43) for Adirondack last year, his second season as a professional. The 5-foot-11 defenseman added seven points (1-6-7) in the Kelly Cup Playoffs, including the game-winning goal in the Thunder’s Game 6 North Division Semifinals series-clinching win in Worcester.
Bergin was originally acquired by the Thunder prior to last season via a trade with the Quad City Mallards after he had skated his rookie season for Greenville in 2016-2017. With the Swamp Rabbits, the smooth-skating defenseman recorded 26 points (7-19-26) from 60 games played and finished with a +10 rating.
The 25-year old has also seen action in the American Hockey League, earning two call-ups to Hartford and skating in a pair of games for the Wolf Pack last year.
Prior to beginning his professional career in 2016, Bergin played four seasons of collegiate hockey at Harvard University. The Natick, MA native appeared in 117 career games with the Crimson, where he totaled 28 points (4-24-28), including a career-high 10 as a senior in the 2015-16 season. Bergin helped lead Harvard to NCAA Tournament appearances in 2015 and 2016 and picked up an assist in the 2015 tournament against Nebraska-Omaha.
