Glens Falls, NY – The Adirondack Thunder were unable to complete another third period comeback as they fell 2-1 to the Cincinnati Cyclones on Saturday evening at U.S. Bank Arena.
After a back and forth beginning to the game, Cincinnati struck first exactly 12 minutes into the first period as Chris Leone scored his first goal of the season. Stationed at the left point, Leone threw a shot through heavy traffic and past Adirondack netminder Nick Riopel for the game's first tally. Forward Shawn O'Donnell and Jesse Schultz collected the assists on the play, the fourth of the season for O'Donnell.
After a pair of penalty calls went against Adirondack, the Cyclones converted on the man advantage to open up a 2-0 lead with 6:23 left in the second period. With the Thunder down two men, Cincinnati moved the puck around the offensive zone, leading to an Eric Knodel one-timer that beat Riopel from the top of the right-hand circle. Schultz and O'Donnell collected the assists on the play, the second of the game for both players.
The Thunder pulled one back midway through the third period as they scored a power-play goal of their own with 12:34 remaining in regulation. Forward Shane Conacher fed teammate Ty Loney at the goalline, where the 6-4 winger skated to the front of the net and put his shot over the glove of Cincinnati netminder Anthony Peters for his fifth tally of the season. Conacher and forward Brian Ward collected the assists on the play, extending Ward’s scoring streak to five games.
Despite controlling the play for the majority of the third period, the Thunder were unable to find an equalizer as they fell to 1-2 on their 12-game road trip.
Adirondack is back in action on Wednesday as they visit the Quad City Mallards for the first meeting in franchise history between the two teams. The Thunder are next home on Saturday, November 25 at 7:00 p.m., which begins a seven-game homestand at Cool Insuring Arena.
